Being a care assistant is no easy task. You’re not just there to spend time with the elderly (talking to them about the good old days), you’re helping them as much as you can and this could include:
- Assisting them with eating
- Hosting their visitors
- Answering their calls
- Taking them shopping
You’ll also have to help them maintain as much independence as possible, and you’ll need to be good with people, because building strong relationships is hugely important. Excellent communications skills are required to succeed in type of role, but first and foremost you have to assist them with the greatest respect. It can take some time to develop these relationships, and you do have to be on top of your game each and every day. Being a care assistant is a demanding job, but it’s a job worth doing and if you’re a people person it could be just right for you. Before you apply for these types of roles, make sure you’re fully prepared for the day-to-day responsibilities.
