Care home managers have a lot of weight on their shoulders; they’re responsible for managing the building, the level of care, the residents, the staff and budgets too. Making sure the level of care is good is one thing, but then the other responsibilities such as managing the building, the food supplies and the happiness of the residents is another.
Care home managers have to be good with people. They have to be able to communicate their ideas effectively and make difficult decisions. Today, relevant manger qualifications can be necessary, while experience is key, so you may have to work your way up in a care home before you can apply for manager positions.
There’s not an awful lot of downtime, and of course you will get days off, where responsibiltiies will be handed down to assistant managers, but the buck stops with you, and you’ll be expected to work when called on, even if you’re on vacation!
