The UK is seeing its biggest decrease in new nurses, and there is no sign that it will improve any time soon. Choosing nursing and midwifery as a career was once a popular option, with many new healthcare workers entering NHS hospitals as qualified nurses with the opportunity to progress and develop as they go through their career.
Nursing has certainly become a less attractive career option, with poor pay, long shifts and working unsociable hours. With the decrease in new nurses and a drop in qualified nurses choosing an alternative career is seeing the NHS hit a critical time.
Nurses are having to work longer hours and cover extra shifts to make up the staff numbers, and all while the pay is no better than a retail worker. The government need to make some vital changes very soon before there are any serious issues. It is no surprise that students are not choosing this career, with such a large amount of negativity surrounding it in recent years.
